Since 1987, the Prix Ars Electronica has been one of the most prestigious prizes awarded in the world of media art. The process of deciding which works are singled out for recognition is quite elaborate. After all, there are thousands of submissions to evaluate in order to finally arrive at the most excellent and most interesting ones. Needless to say, these deliberations are not carried out by one individual. There are many people involved—beginning with Ars Electronica staffers who perform preliminary assessments to narrow down the field to a manageable number. This rather lengthy shortlist of promising candidates is then turned over to the Prix jurors.

Both musicians have accomplishments to their credit; they’re consummate artists. But at the same time, there are these facial expressions—when they discuss their new album, upcoming concerts, expressive possibilities now available to them on stage. Suddenly, there’s a radiant glow, enthusiasm that can’t be simulated. It shows that Tosca isn’t anywhere even close to resting on their laurels and is still burning with artistic energy. Including the prospect of joint projects with the Ars Electronica Futurelab.

Hermann Nitsch SINNE UND SEIN - Ars Electronica Futurelab
Our previous destination was London. The next stop on our itinerary is Mistelbach, which isn’t a hotbed of paranoia so at least there are no security checkpoints to pass through. The reason for our trip to Lower Austria is to visit the Hermann Nitsch Museum, where a retrospective entitled SINNE UND SEIN (Sense and Being) will open on April 7. The Ars Electronica Futurelab has contributed to it, which is what this account is all about.
openAIR, the mixing-desk for everyone
Radio FRO 105.0, free radio for Linz, has been organizing workshops since 2006 at which people with—as well as without—handicaps/impairments can learn the basics of broadcasting. One of the major challenges in a studio is posed by the mixing console and its faders, knobs and switches, some of which have to be operated simultaneously and with great precision. This is a substantial hurdle to master, and one even more daunting for people whose motor skills are limited. The Ars Electronica Futurelab was recently commissioned by Radio FRO to develop a mixing console that features only push-buttons and thus provides substantially more barrier-free operation.

Just one more level, only this last jump, a single, final mission to complete … and my, how the evening just seems to fly by! Who hasn’t faced this situation? A lot has happened since Pacman & Friends came to town. Upcoming at the Ars Electronica Center is an intensive encounter with computer gaming, and thus a great opportunity to meet & greet others who share this “hobby” or to rekindle a passion you though had flamed out long ago.

The Tabakfabrik Linz, new home of Ars Electronica Solutions
For many years, Linz’s Tabakfabrik tobacco processing plant was a city landmark, a symbol of work and prosperity. The gloomy days of privatization and the accompanying decline in significance are over. What began to a certain extent with REPAIR, the 2010 Ars Electronica Festival, is now being continued under the direction of Chris Müller. The Tabakfabrik has become a place for creativity, for openness, for the making of products by human beings for human beings. Which is why this is just the right setting for Ars Electronica Solutions’ studios. We recently had a chat with Chris Müller, who’s responsible for the temporary use of the Tabakfabrik.
Taking the Lytro through the Ars Electronica Center
We recently published an interview with Oliver Bimber, head of the Institute of Computer Graphics at Johannes Kepler University Linz, in which we went into the subject of light-field photography. On January 31, 2013, our interviewee will be the star of a Deep Space Live. To provide a sneak preview of what light-field photography is all about, we asked David Schedl, a leading light on Bimber’s staff, to go on a photo safari in and around the Ars Electronica Center and to take along a Lytro, a very popular, compact camera to photograph light fields.

Mobile Lorm Glove
Marginalized communities like deaf-blind people are excluded from several forms of communication. The prototype translates the hand-touch alphabet “Lorm”, a common form of communication used by people with both hearing and vision impairment, into text and vice versa.
