The motto translates roughly as “pondering” or “brooding”. In music, the word is used for the alternation between melancholy and dance-like, exuberant passages. Antonin Dvořák wrote his Dumky for piano trio after intensive studies of Slavic folklore. Dmitri Shostakovich was also inspired by Eastern European Yiddish folk music; his piano trio is characterized by pain sublimated into serenity.
” You will be happy and sad. In some places it will be like a serious song, in others like a joyful dance…” (A. Dvořák)
