The biological activity on planet Earth is colorful and diverse. And this diversity has a long history – in fact, it is 3.6 billion years old. As a result of evolution, amazingly diverse life forms and spaces have emerged, forming the basis of our ecosystem. But the Anthropocene, the age in which humans have the greatest impact on the environment, is putting a strain on the diversity of life. Who could succeed in raising the environmental awareness of individual citizens in a sustainable way? Is it politicians with their government programs? Scientists with their research results? Or artists with their new approaches?

With our museum program we want to set a sign for a sustainable and nature-oriented future, in which technological developments can also be the solution and not only the cause of the problem.

You and your family can expect a colorful program of thematic tours suitable for children, open workshops, citizen science engagements, lectures, discussions with scientific experts, with artists and much more.
The Biodiversity Days thematic weekend is part of the project “Microbiome 4 Future!” and is financially supported by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

Workshop: Klatsch Abklatsch

When: SA 21.05 / 11:00-11:30 / 13:30-14:00
SU 22.05 / 10:30-11:00 / 16:00-16:30
Where: Biolab, 1st floor
Age limit: from 5 years

Microbes are tiny creatures that are invisible to the naked eye. In short workshops, you will dive into the fascinating invisible world of microbes. Together we will learn about some of these tiny, but very important microbes. By simply slapping fingers, hair or their own objects on a special culture medium, the young researchers and their parents will learn how microbes can be made to grow.

Workshop: From tea to leather

When: 22.05.22, 13:00-14:30, participation possible at any time.
Where: in front of the Biolab, 1st floor
Age limit: from 10 years

In the short workshop around “The Sound Tea,” you can learn how fermenting tea can grow your own leather-like material. Bacteria and fungi eat sugar and produce an unusual and novel material from it. Whether you use it to build a membrane for a speaker or make clothing, the possibilities for experimentation are vast. As a byproduct, there’s also a delicious drink called “kombucha.”

Workshop: DIY Seedbombs

When: 21.05.22, 14:00-15:30, participation possible at any time.
Where: CitizenLab, 1st floor
Age limit: none

Just one meadow flower can feed up to ten insects like butterflies, bees or bumblebees – and they are more than important for our planet. With a very simple do-it-yourself effort, we can very quickly and easily beautify our surroundings. In a workshop suitable for children we mix different flower and herb seeds, clay and water and make seedbombs for greening traffic islands, avenues or even for (your own) garden bed! You will not only learn step-by-step how to make seedbombs, but also why they are so important for reclaiming public space.
