Aimed at all those curious about cross-disciplinary thinking, researchers, innovators, industrial leaders, artists, scientists, technologists, engineers, mathematicians and those not bounded by their sectors, joined the First BCU International STEAM Conference in July 2020.

Biographies

Rehan Bhana, Associate Professor; Director of innovative pedagogy, catapulting steam research, industry and practice in digital and tech. Leading STEAM curriculum in the faculty of computing engineering and technology. Co-founder STEAMHouse at BCU.

Tom Cahill-Jones, Senior Development Manager, STEAMhouse, Tom studied music at the University of Birmingham, being awarded a PhD in electroacoustic composition in 2007 and winning a number of international competitions. His interest in digital creativity led to his work as coordinator of the Integra project, which aimed to develop an accessible live-electronic music environment. Since 2012 he has been working in the fields of cross and STEAM innovation, investigating how artistic practice can be applied to other sectors to generate new thinking. He currently holds the joint position of STEAMhouse Director of Operations and Development Manager, responsible for putting in place the plans to deliver Birmingham City University’s new centre for collaborative innovation.

Laura Veart, is an experienced programme manager, Laura Veart, is an experienced programme manager, currently running the Urban M Interreg Europe project which is about changing policy to support collaborative maker spaces in 8 cities across the EU. She has been involved in a number of relevant projects connected to STEAM including an Interreg 4C project called Cross Innovation and most recently the team has been instrumental in opening an new innovation centre in Birmingham called STEAMhouse. Prior to this, Laura supported academics at the university to bid for EU research and mobility funding for their projects.

Clayton Shaw, STEAMhouse Programme Manager STEAMhouse is a centre for creative innovation. We help entrepreneurs, sole traders, companies and citizens to build their businesses, develop new products and services and collaborate.

Charmaine Stint, Senior Development Manager, Research, Innovation & Enterprise, Birmingham City university. Working cross-faculty and cross-sector, to support the University with industry engagement activity, with a specific focus on the creative industries. Currently overseeing a portfolio of projects, including Project Manager forErasmus+ multi-partner DT.UNI.Design Thinking Approach for an Interdisciplinary University project, exploring design thinking in a higher education context; project managing ERDF Business Support programmes, and co-ordinating and managing a range of large-scale events and activities across the university.
