This panel will investigate approaches in telematic collaborative art production and telematic art reception through the voices of four artists and researchers experienced in the cutting/edge production of telematic performances and collaborative music production.

Alexandra Murray-Leslie (co-founder Chicks on Speed) and Claudia Schnugg will trace the beginnings of the female tradition in telematic art and present the All Women’s Networked Jam Session. Tina Frank will illustrate the effect and technical influences of the visual components of A/V performances. Ximena Alarcón will contribute insights on liminal space from a migrant’s perspective, and Anat Ben David will provide specific insights from the vantage of music production. The panel will be opened by representatives of the city of Linz who will inform about activities and measures of equality in Linz.

Biographies

Dr. Ximena Alarcón
Dr. Ximena Alarcón is a sound artist researcher interested in listening to in-between spaces: dreams, underground public transport, and the migratory context. She creates telematic improvisations using Deep Listening, and interfaces for relational listening. She has a PhD in Music, Technology and Innovation from De Montfort University (2007), and is a Deep Listening® certified tutor. Her major artistic postdoctoral research projects are: the online environment Sounding Underground (IOCT-DMU, The Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship 2007-2009); the telematic performances Networked Migrations (CRiSAP – UAL, 2011-2017); and INTIMAL: an “embodied” physical-virtual system for relational listening in telematic sonic performance (RITMO-UiO, 2017-2019, Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship). She is currently a Senior Tutor in the online Deep Listening certification program offered by The Center for Deep Listening (RPI), and works independently in the second phase of the INTIMAL project that involves: an “embodied” physical-virtual system to explore sense of place and presence across distant locations; and a co-creation laboratory for listening to migrations with Latin American migrant women.

Dr. Alexandra Murray-Leslie
Dr. Alexandra Murray-Leslie is artistic researcher & co-founder of art band Chicks on Speed. She is Associate Professor at Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, member of NTNU ARTEC (Art and Technology Task Force, where she runs the ArtScience residency) adjunct faculty at The University of Art and Design, Linz. Recent projects include Artist in Residence, Autodesk Technology Centre, Pier 9, San Francisco, Artistic Director YOMO, Youth Mobile, GSMA World Mobile Congress, hosting radio program Girl Monster, Radio Primavera Sound and Director of Entertainment at America’s Cup world series 2013/14 where she worked closely on the the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project outreach and education programs. Recent Collaborations include projects with artist ORLAN, scientist Steve Mann and MANlabs, Protopixel, expressive lighting systems, Reactable and Wekinator (machine learning for artists).

Alex’s artistic research explores designing, sustainably fabricating & performing computer enhanced footwear for a new theatrical, audiovisual expressivity of the feet on land, air and in water. Her work has been shown in major biennales, festivals and art institutes such as; Ars Electronica, ZKM Centre for Art and Media, 56th & 57 Venice Biennale, MoMA NY, Centre Pompidou, Museum of Modern Art Australia, Turner Prize Tate Britain, ArtScience Gallery Dublin & Singapore.

Prof. Tina Frank
Tina Frank is an Austrian designer, artist, and professor at the University of Art and Design Linz where she is heading the Department Visual Communication at the Institute for Media. She collaborates with musicians to create audio-visual performances and installations. As a graphic designer she has established three design companies, which have worked for a wide range of clients. In recent years her design work shifted to data visualizations for scientific projects. Together with Marianne Pührerfellner and Sabine Kienzer she established splace-magazine.at for the University of Art and Design Linz as an explorative and playful communication tool that investigates into possibilities of publications, exhibition and media formats. Her current focus in teaching is on digital publications, data and music visualizations. Her video works have been screened at numerous festivals worldwide.

Dr. Anat Ben-David
Dr. Anat Ben-David practice stretches from music-composition, performance, video installation and automatic writing. Anat pioneered her multichannel video-work in the early 1990’s in live performances in Israel and video stayed central to her work however music-composition has become the focus of her practice. In 2017 Anat has written, composed, performed and directed Kairos OperaArt with designer Zowie Broach (Boudicca) at the Victoria and Albert museum, and since delved further into the conjunction between classical-music forms and electronic and digital synthesis, collaborating on the latest albums: Tzipora and The Promiss Of Meat with opera singer Anna Dennis and Poet and countertenor Richard Scott. Anat is an associate lecture leading performance workshops at the RCA and Central Saint Martins (London, UK) and as a collaborator in Theater Of Making, Anat has been collaborating with Alex Murray Leslie, and Melissa Logan -Chicks On Speed since early 2000. In her PhD: Oscillation and Disturbance in the OpeRaArt, she claims that Interdisciplinary work is work that arrives out of interactions between systems- such as language and sound, and that meaning arrives out of that interaction. Anat is currently a resident at Somerset House Studios, where she is running an experimental interdisciplinary platform.

Dr. Claudia Schnugg
Dr. Claudia Schnugg is an independent researcher and curator in the field of art and science, and producer of artscience projects, looking at the intersection of art with science, technology, business, and society. Her academic work focuses on analyzing the effects of art and artistic initiatives in organizational and social settings, including change processes and a major focus on new technologies. As advocate of artscience collaboration, a producer and curator of residency programs, she has been the catalyst for numerous artscience projects. Thereby, Claudia is working with leading scientific institutions, tech corporations and cultural partners. She was assistant professor at JKU in Linz, visiting researcher at Copenhagen Business School, the Art|Sci Center + Lab, Los Angeles, and at European Southern Observatory, Chile. She worked with Ars Electronica Futurelab (2014-2016) and was first Artistic Director of Science Gallery Venice (2018-2019). Her most recent book is “Creating ArtScience Collaboration” (2019).
