(Linz, September 3, 2019) At this year’s Ars Electronica Festival, Interface Cultures students from the University of Art and Design Linz will be showing their work under the title “TRANSCODE!” from September 5 to 9 to mark the 15th anniversary of the Interface Cultures program.

Not only the Ars Electronica Festival itself, but also the master’s program “Interface Cultures” at the University of Art and Design Linz are celebrating their anniversary this year. For 15 years now, students have been showing interactive media art under the direction of Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau. This was also the case at this year’s Ars Electronica Festival. Reason enough to engage in a comprehensive process of transformation and investigate processes of transcoding in the form of an exhibition, performances and presentations as well as discursive approaches.

With their exhibition “TRANSCODE! young artists call for fiction and new translation processes of our reality with the aim of a possible active transformation of our thinking, functioning and “fiction”. They also ask themselves to what extent a transformation should not also question existing dispositives and whether transcoding processes do not also require imagination, courage to fiction and the abandonment of a reality and its security norms.

Spiral cables that generate various moments of shadow through varying light projections (“Curly Cable” by Andrea Rebok), the attempt to teach poetry to a computer (“A reactive poetry machine” by Fabian Frei), a kitschy singing disc of Extrawurst as an abstract self-portrait (“Sausageface” by Isabella Auer) or a microwave transformed into a moving image projector as a viable media player (“Insert & Play” by Jeon Hess) are just a few highlights among the 17 exhibited works and research projects.

15 years of Interface Cultures
Founded in 2004 by Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau, the artistic-scientific master’s programme has since provided a combination of technical know-how, interdisciplinary research and artistic-scientific approaches to developing new creative interfaces that create progressive and innovative applications for media art, media design, media research and communication.

The works and research projects can be seen in Postcity free of charge from 5 to 9 September 2019. Opening hours: Thursday to Sunday from 10.00 to 19.30, Monday from 10.00 to 18.00.
