Sensing, Signal Detection, and Interactivity

This group will be invited to look at possible ways systems can react to incoming signals.

The signals can come from local sensors, the internet, or elsewhere, and can be thought of as numbers that fluctuate in time. They may be gathered in real time, recalled from earlier recordings, or out-of-time, and may be organized as sporadic events (such as earthquakes for example), or continuous streams (such as a seismograph).  They may have different data rates, precisions, and may show different statistical behaviors.  A first objective of this group will be to acquire a clear, precise, but not overly technical language for describing properties of signals and an understanding of their artistic affordances. 

On a practical level, we will look at some tools for building interactive systems, mostly realized in Pure Data, but possibly using other environments or languages as needed.  Depending on interest, sub-topics might include conversion between sporadic and continuous signals, classification and event detection, signal analysis techniques, and decision making.  Possible tools include Fourier analysis, cluster analysis, dimensional reduction, artificial neural networks, and hidden Markov chains.
