In the 2023/24 school year, the already seventh Austrian CanSat competition for students aged 14 and over will take place!

What is it about?

The task of the participating teams is to build a satellite (Sat) in the size of a beverage can (Can). This is transported to a height of at least 500 meters with a rocket and ejected. During the descent back to the ground, the CanSat must fulfill two missions:
  • Primary mission:
    • Measurement of temperature and air pressure, transmission of the values to the ground station at least once per second
    • Determination of the actual ejection height and fall speed
    • Creation of a temperature profile
  • Secondary mission:
    • Fulfillment of a mission chosen by the team. There are no limits to technical and scientific ingenuity!
Possible starting points for the secondary mission:
  • A scientific question
  • A technical problem
  • A project idea of societal relevance.
Examples:
  • Collection of telemetry data (acceleration, GPS location, etc.)
  • Program for remote control of the CanSat (so that it executes commands sent from the ground station during the descent)
  • A landing as close to the target as possible at a previously defined landing site.
When applying, the motivation for the secondary mission must be explained.

What is special about the CanSat competition?

Participation in the CanSat competition offers students the opportunity to go through all phases of a real space project. These range from mission selection, design of the CanSat, integration of the technical components, technical test runs, and the actual launch of the mini-satellite to the scientific analysis of the data obtained. In addition, soft skills such as teamwork and interdisciplinary thinking are trained.

What can you win?

The winning team can look forward to participating in the Space Engineer for a Day Event of the ESA at the ESTEC in the Netherlands!

General Participation Requirements

  • A team must consist of 3-6 students of secondary level II.
  • All participants must attend a school in Austria. The team members do not necessarily have to come from the same school. Teams that have found each other through extracurricular activities (scout camp, after-school care, club, etc.) can also participate.
  • Each team must be accompanied by 1-2 teachers/ mentors. The task of the teachers/mentors is primarily to control the students’ progress. If necessary, the teacher/mentor should provide advice and assistance. They also act as a contact person between the team and the project organizer.
  • Complete filling out of the application form
  • The application deadline was November 6, 2023.

For all interested parties, there was an information workshop (online) on October 18, 2023, 5 PM. This took place online via Zoom . Here is a recording of it.
