Christl Baur (Head of Ars Electronica Festival) and Laura Welzenbach (Head of Ars Electronica Export) dedicate the ninth episode of “Inside Festival” to the topic of “Sustainability and Ecology”. They present three projects from our Festival Gardens and give us a sneak peek into one youth perspective of “Create your World”.

Esch-sur-Alzette, the cross-border area in the south of Luxembourg, is in transformation: a former steel industry area will transform into a center for future-oriented knowledge and innovative creativity. Esch2022 – European capital of culture invited Ars Electronica Export to become part of this transformation through curating an exhibition in the Möllerei. The exhibition invites visitors to explore art as a tool for us humans to understand and envision the future.

The Garden Araucanía with the title “Polygonal Forest” organized by the Fundación Mar Adentro from Chile, takes us on four paths of sensorial contemplation. They will take us through the different visual and symbolic layers that compose this virtually analogues forest. An invitation to reflect on our role as humans upon entering these ancient natural spaces.

Our Garden in Quebec organized by Hexagram presents two of the projects they will show during the festival. “Bois eau métal” is a Documentation of the first art installation of the Canada Research Chair MÉDIANE, presented outdoors in July 2021 at Jardin botanique Montréal. The installation experiments artistically with the ecophysiological data of three species of trees collected by the research programme SmartForests. “Reclaiming the Planet” will be a publication, series of videotaped discussions, and installation of data visualizations and architectural models.

As their creative project for the 2019/2020 school year, students of class 1B at BRG/ORG Antonkriegergasse chose to produce an animated film with the title “Das unmögliche Computerspiel (The impossible computer game)”. A film by Yaara, Valentina, Milan, Finn, Ali Kaan, Raffaela, and Pascal on the subject of “We Save the World,” in which a much-anticipated school trip to Mars is interrupted by an alien attack. The students were fascinated by film as a medium and made great progress within only a few days.
