Simona Levi: Don’t blame the people. Don’t blame the Internet. Blame the power.

Simona Levi (IT/ES)

Power has always panicked in the face of disintermediation—any update that brings society closer to real democracy. Every meaningful societal transformation challenges the status quo, and power defends itself by blaming the people and increasing repression. This has been true for every technology that expanded direct access to information: from Plato’s time, through the invention of the printing press, to the rise of the Internet. But if we truly believe in democracy, we must stop repeating the mistakes of the past. Let’s build a democratic digitalization—one that guarantees real sovereignty for the people. A system where the content and data we generate are under our democratic control: auditable, explainable, interoperable, and open.
