Are faith in God and feminist convictions mutually exclusive? Girls & Gods explores this question through Ukrainian Femen activist Inna Shevchenko, who—despite her atheism—meets women* who defend and transform their monotheistic traditions by infusing them with feminist values.
Known for her bold protests—from sawing down a cross in solidarity with Pussy Riot to facing violence and arrest—Shevchenko travels through richly adorned churches, mosques, and synagogues as well as activist spaces. Along the way she joins a feminist Bible study in France, visits a support group for women* who escaped Sharia law, meets Jewish-Orthodox wig-makers campaigning for choice, and connects with Iran’s Woman-Life-Freedom movement.
Through these encounters—with believers, theologians, and religious feminists—the film offers a “realistic utopia”: Women* working within their faiths to break down patriarchal structures, the question whether monotheistic religions can be feminist, and whether feminism can itself become a form of faith.
