Otocyon Megalotis

evala (JP)

Otocyon Megalotis is a three-dimensional sound installation that is experienced alone in a completely dark, anechoic box. The sound program lasts approximately seven minutes. This work is the genesis of evala’s See by Your Ears project series, which explores a new auditory experience—one that awakens the inherent, dormant potential of human hearing. In Otocyon Megalotis, evala conducted field recordings in his hometown of Kyotango (northern Kyoto) and artificially created the echoes and reflections of the spaces, adding movement and acoustic transformations in sound to compose the piece. Being alone in this space, the spatial sound design of evala creates a universe of new sensory worlds inviting visitors to discover what it truly means to See by Your Ears. The jury found great value in how it democratized sound art, aligning with Isao Tomita’s vision of bringing novel music and sound to the public.
