Sensing Quantum

LAS Art Foundation (DE)

One century after the emergence of quantum physics, its principles are moving from theory to practice, with far-reaching implications—yet public understanding in this area still lags behind. Sensing Quantum fosters interdisciplinary collaborations to translate complex quantum principles into immersive, thought-provoking experiences. It brings together artists, scientists and thinkers to highlight the importance of creative experimentation with emerging technologies.

The display presents early outcomes of this long-term initiative, gathering insights, materials, and perspectives from key collaborators, include impressions from Laure Prouvost’s installation WE FELT A STAR DYING and Kara-Lis Coverdale’s sound piece Primary Action at a Distance, composed using the Actias, a synthesizer that integrates quantum principles. Visitors can also explore how a quantum computer works and trace key moments in the history of this technology. The presentation invites visitors to witness how artistic and scientific exploration can evolve together.

  • QC-Modell

    Forschungszentrum Jülich (DE)

It looks like a golden chandelier—but the QC model shows the typical structure of a superconducting quantum computer. Forschungszentrum Jülich (DE) is one of Europe’s leading institutions in the field of quantum research.

  • LAS Art Foundation

LAS Art Foundation looks deep into the present and gives form to future imaginaries. Working with artists, thinkers, and institutions worldwide, the foundation catalyzes ideas that shape innovative projects and experiences, including installations and performances, educational initiatives, publications, and research projects. Key research areas include AI, quantum computing, ecology, and biotechnology—highlighting the intersections between art, science, and technologies.

  • Laure Prouvost

Laure Prouvost is a particle of a larger body of particles living and working in the Northern Eurosphere. After studying at Central Saint Martins, Goldsmiths and taking part in the LUX Associate Programme in London, Prouvost found a superposition next to the wet space of a dirty canal, helpful to float around the globe to perform images, sounds, installations, tea bags, wet floors and tentacles. They won the MaxMara Art Prize for Women and were the recipient of the Turner Prize.

  • Tommaso Calarco

Tommaso Calarco is the Director of the Institute for Quantum Control at Forschungszentrum Jülich and a professor at the universities of Cologne and Bologna. In 2016, he authored the Quantum Manifesto, which served as the foundation for the European Commission’s Quantum Flagship initiative, aimed at solidifying Europe’s leadership in quantum technologies. He chairs the Quantum Community Network (QCN) and played a key role in establishing the European Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC).

  • Kara-Lis Coverdale

Kara-Lis Coverdale holds an MA in musicology and composition, and has received international critical acclaim for her scores, recordings and live performances. Coverdale has held residencies at Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM), Paris; Elektronmusikstudion (EMS), Stockholm; and FUGA, Zaragoza, and has presented performances, talks and installations around the world, including at Barbican Art Gallery, London; Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris; Kraftwerk Berlin; and Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg.

  • Libby Heaney

Libby Heaney is an artist and quantum physicist whose work explores the intersections of art, science, and technology. Holding a PhD in quantum information science from the University of Leeds, she previously conducted research at the University of Oxford before transitioning into the arts. Heaney is renowned for using quantum computing as a creative tool, producing immersive installations, video works, and AI-generated pieces that challenge perceptions of reality, identity, and language.

  • Günseli Yalçınkaya

Günseli Yalçınkaya is a writer, researcher and critic based in London. She is a Contributing Editor at Dazed Magazine and External Research Associate at Moth Quantum. Her ongoing practice of internet folklore shines a lens on emerging technologies and online culture with a particular focus on the myths and ideologies embedded within these systems. As an artist, she is a member of the multidisciplinary AV show The Talk, alongside musicians James K and Heith and architect Andrea Belosi.
