What does a satellite hear?

A sonic journey through Linz from space

Ars Electronica Solutions (AT), Rupert Huber (AT)

This installation transforms Earth Observation data into a poetic soundscape, offering a new perspective on the city—based on Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite data from Linz.
The satellite’s color spectra are musically interpreted according to the movements and positions of the visitors, who themselves become satellites. By moving through the space, they draw the data towards them, transforming it into a dynamic sonic experience—like an imaginary flight over the city.
This interactive composition makes the invisible audible, merging science, technology, and art into a sensory encounter with Earth Observation.
The installation was previously presented from June 24-26, 2025, at the “Space in the City Festival” at Karlsplatz, Vienna. The festival was part of the Living Planet Symposium—an international conference of the European Space Agency (ESA) focusing on Earth Observation and environmental issues. At the official opening, the work was performed live: A dancer embodied the satellite and brought the soundscape to life through her movements.
