Die Welle

The wave is the highlight of the Planet Ocean exhibition at the Gasometer Oberhausen. The impressive 1,000 square metre projection shows lifelike animations from the mysterious world of the sea.

Ars Electronica Solutions conceived and realised this masterpiece, which fascinates with its handcrafted, creative scenes. At the Ars Electronica Festival 2024, the installation could be experienced using VR glasses.

Visitors can step beneath the horizontal screen, known as “Gaze,” and immerse themselves in the underwater world. Without a diving suit and mask, they experience the ocean up close with whales, fish, or jellyfish. The visual spectacle is accompanied by an immersive sound experience that creates a unique atmosphere. The striking architecture of the Gasometer Oberhausen, Europe’s tallest exhibition hall, enhances the experience.

The Wave integrates seamlessly into the industrial design, making the ocean surface visually merge with the ceiling structure. The hall’s size provides exceptional acoustics, where music and the soft echoes of visitors create a unique oceanic ambiance. This successful blend of visual, acoustic, and architectural elements makes visitors feel as if they are truly underwater. Planet Ocean is open until the end of the year.
