Ars Electronica Solutions developed content for the ESA’ s METABOX located at ESA-ESRIN European centre of excellence for exploitation of Earth observation missions.
The METABOX is an innovative holographic display that generates a floating 4K volumetric hologram. In the future, visitors will be able to interactively explore ESA’s satellite missions and virtually navigate through global datasets and satellite imagery.

In addition to showcasing Earth observation data and ESA merchandise, a dedicated Art & Science mode is being created. This mode provides an artistic and interactive approach to satellite data, offering a new and engaging way to experience ESA’s missions. Visitors can explore satellite missions interactively, discover merchandise, and be guided by a virtual host through global datasets and satellite imagery.
With a focus on ESA Earth Observation activities, globes within the METABOX represents a specific category of Earth observation, such as sea surface temperature, above-ground biomass, or sea level rise. These globes react to visitor proximity, drawing attention and enabling interactive data selection. This novel visualization not only highlights the technological excellence of ESA’s missions but also makes the importance of Earth observation tangible.

This project is part of Ars Electronica Solutions’ Science Experience initiative, designed to make science accessible to an even wider audience in various locations.
With METABOX, Ars Electronica Solutions demonstrates how state-of-the-art visualization technology can bring science and the public closer together.
