What does a space sound like? And what happens when movement creates music?

From June 5 to November 9, 2025, the 25-meter-high rotunda at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich transforms into an interactive musical instrument. In collaboration with Austrian composer Rupert Huber, Ars Electronica Solutions presents an extraordinary installation: Music of Encounters.

Visitors themselves set the space in motion – and in sound. A sensor-based 3D tracking system installed in the dome captures every movement in real time. A specially developed software translates these movements into musical structures based on Huber’s compositions. The result is a polyphonic soundscape that constantly evolves: the more people interact, the more complex the music becomes.

The architecture becomes the instrument. 28 strategically positioned loudspeakers distribute the sound throughout the space, letting it move, shift, and make time and encounter audible. The rotunda is interpreted as a kind of “symbolic clock” – a sonic matrix that changes with the time of day and the presence of people.

Music of Encounters is more than just a sound installation: it’s a social and collective experience. Music becomes a social sculpture, a shared process, an invitation to move, linger, and listen closely.

Discover how architecture, technology, and music come together in a completely new way.
