Topic group: BRAIN-COMPUTER INTERFACES

The project explores the notion of transparency as a human capacity or impossibility andhow technology enables the interplay between transparency, vulnerability, and identity. The notion of transparency manifests itself as a communication vessel between humans andtechnology, as an interface and as a question we pose to the public.

We hide the truth in thecorners of communication and we conceal our own faults under masks and disguises. It is inthe face of this uncomfortable and unexpected vulnerability that machines can make ustransparent, revealing our burdens and intimacies. The project aims to raise issuessuch as privacy, communication, vulnerability in the connection between humans andmachine. Within the topic of Brain-Computer Interfaces, we reflect on “whoowns the truth”, by discussing whether our thoughts and thinking patterns are realrepresentations of the truth of who we are as people. Every day we wake up and decide toput on a mask to be able to navigate the world. We conceptualized the idea from theBrain-Computer Interface which takes data from our brain and puts it on display. The installation wants to convey the idea that truth and transparency often rely onvulnerability and self-exposure. Through a performance of emotive movement andchoreography, along with a representation of our take on truth and transparency, we want toraise a question for the audience. For accessibility, we use descriptive text to visually supportthe audience experience. In addition, the video installation is accessible to individuals withmobility impairments.
