Chairs and Tables for a Good Cause: Social Furniture

,

Among the interior furnishings at the 2018 Ars Electronica Festival are Social Furniture—wooden seating and tables build together by refugees and Austrians. This cooperative effort by the ULF–State of Upper Austria Independent Volunteer Center and Ars Electronica is supported by the office of State Commissioner of Integration Rudi Anschober, Weyland GmbH, and the human rights organization SOS-Menschenrechte and put into practice together with the architects of any:time.

In August, industrious craftsmen were hard at work with their screwdrivers and saws assembling wooden furniture in a pop-up carpentry shop in POSTCITY Linz. Throughout, the accent was on having fun and enjoying collaborative creativity. This video gives an impression of how people and things came together in the workshop in POSTCITY!

Once this unpretentious wooden furniture has done its duty at the Ars Electronica Festival September 6-10, 2018, it will be donated to refugees, NGOs and SOS-Menschenrechte’s new House of Human Rights. Plus, three of the hand-made pieces will be raffled off at the ZusammenHelfen Conference on Festival Saturday, September 8th.
