With the project “Remix el Barrio, Food Waste Biomaterial Makers,” designers joined forces to consider how craftsmanship and digital manufacturing could be used to create new products from food scraps. The result is a multifaceted collection of upcycled objects: from dyes made from avocado pits to bioplastics made from orange peels to soaps made from waste oil or paper made from coffee bean shells. “Remix el Barrio” will be awarded the STARTS Prize 2021 of the European Commission for this.

The Projects “Remix el Barrio, Food Waste Biomaterial Makers” and “Oceans in Transformation” are the winners of “STARTS Prize” and will be featured in the Kepler’s garden at JKU Campus.

The STARTS Prize has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 956603.
