However, the stories surrounding St. Stephen’s Cathedral also play a central role, telling us about religion, customs and tradition, but also about the power and politics that have made St. Stephen’s Cathedral a companion to Austria’s destiny.
With The Translucent St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Ars Electronica Futurelab has achieved a milestone in the visualization of historical buildings using 3D laser scanning: St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna was scanned with more than 20 billion measuring points and the resulting point cloud was enhanced with high-resolution images in collaboration with Scanlab Projects from London to provide a realistic 360° panoramic view of various interesting locations in and around the cathedral. Due to the transparency of the point cloud, the structure of the building itself remains visible and allows completely new insights into the building.
