Together with his Australian colleague Eric Benson, Dr. Dietmar Hager from Upper Austria runs a special observatory for astrophotography in the middle of the Australian desert. On this evening, he will be showing a selection of the star photos he has taken over the years, many of which have also been published by NASA as “Astronomy Picture of the Day”.

He explains the enormous technical and time-consuming effort that goes into creating such a deep space photo and why such a photo is more than just a long exposure. He also explores the question of why it has become almost impossible to take such photos from his observatory in the Mühlviertel in recent years.
