I Need More Space

At the Ars Electronica Center, space becomes an art space and outer space an inexhaustible source of inspiration: under the title “I Need More Space”, the exhibition focuses on the growing importance of outer space for everyday life on Earth.

The vastness of space has long been a place of longing not only for researchers and science fiction enthusiasts, but also for countries and companies – and ultimately for all of us. I Need More Space addresses the growing importance of space for everyday life on Earth, for technology and the economy, and not least for positive visions of the future. In addition to technical achievements, the view into the sky has also inspired mankind to create many artistic works. In the Ars Electronica Center, space becomes an art sphere and outer space an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

A particularly important concern of the European Space Agency (ESA), which is dedicated to the peaceful exploration and use of space for the benefit of mankind, is the education of young people. To this end, it has launched the ESERO project and established “education offices” in all member countries. Since 2016, ESERO Austria has served as a point of contact for teachers, mentors and young space enthusiasts. It thus represents a fixed star in Austrian STEM education and in the space focus of the Ars Electronica Center.

The interactive installation FadingColors by Noor Stenfert Kroese (NL) and Amir Bastan (IR) combines living algae cultures with data on coral bleaching in the world’s oceans almost in real time. In this way, the algae directly reflect the situation under the sea surface.
