The movement of the moon around the earth is just as much an old hat as the movement of the earth around the sun. Many also know about the insanely high speed at which our solar system orbits around the centre of the Milky Way: 1,000,000 km/h. Yet another extraordinary thing goes on: within a galactic year, the orbit, or more precisely the distance between our solar system and the centre of the Milky Way, changes by several thousand light years. And this galactic year has another incredible dimension: a galactic year covers 250 million years.
With the unique visualisation capabilities of Deep Space 8K at the Ars Electronica Center, we have shown you this variable orbit of the sun before.
On this special evening, however, we leave the usual perspective and look at what the orbit of the solar system would look like from the fictional perspective of an observer looking at us from the outside.
Afterwards, we will again embark on a journey into the depths of space and let ourselves be enchanted by the wonderful world of the stars.
