Advent in Linz. For more than a hundred years, the Nativity scene by Munich sculptor Sebastian Osterrieder has fascinated visitors to Linz’s St. Mary’s Cathedral in the weeks around Christmas. This year, for the first time, the Nativity scene will appear in all its new glory: as interactive 3D Advent program, it has been digitized and virtually re-staged in all its details for the Ars Electronica Center’s Deep Space 8K and the Cathedral’s crypt. The audiovisual VR experience is intended to conjure up pre-Christmas contemplation in the hearts of visitors. The Virtual Nativity also offers a younger generation a lively 360° perspective on the biblical story and an old tradition.
