If You Have Starry Skies in Your Eyes

Rib (JP)

This project originated from my personal background. With my interactive prosthetic eye, I am challenging the societal gaze that often compels people with disabilities to feel “invisible”, “untouchable” and “hidden”. The project thereby increases the options for self-expression for people with disabilities, encouraging people to come out of hiding.

This prosthetic eye that I created, and I am wearing, has an integrated magnetic sensor, LED light and a battery encapsulated in medical-grade acrylic resin.

In Japanese society, physical “deficiencies,” including prosthetic eyes, are often perceived negatively. However, through this glowing prosthetic eye project, I aim to showcase the unique charm and potential of physical differences. I advocate the importance of not hiding these attributes but proudly bringing them to the forefront.

As a child, she lost sight in her right eye due to an incident in a dysfunctional family. As an adult, she began wearing a prosthetic eye but felt uncomfortable with the industry’s “concealed” designs. She created a prosthetic eye with a starry sky pattern, which she now wears daily. She started her career as an actor and prosthetic eye artist in 2021 after appearing on NHK ETV’s “Bari bara” series.
