Using the concrete example of satellite observation, we will examine the prerequisites and tools society needs to act autonomously and effectively, particularly in the context of natural disasters. Experts in Earth observation, representatives from public organizations involved in knowledge dissemination, and users will share their perspectives and experiences. Together, we will discuss how the transfer of knowledge through satellite data can strengthen societal resilience and provide hope for a secure and informed future.

  • Michael Kropf

    Michael Martin Kropf, born on April 18, 1970, in Bern, attended the Gymnasium and the University of Bern. For over 20 years, he worked in various roles as a gastronomy, culture, and event manager, including at the national exhibition EXPO 02. In Bern, he founded and operated three gastronomy and cultural venues. Later, Michael Kropf served as the deputy CEO and COO of the national stadium STADE DE SUISSE Wankdorf Bern, CEO of the football and concert stadium Stockhorn Arena Thun, CEO of the event hall Markthalle Burgdorf, and worked as an independent consultant for large-scale event projects. In the past four years, Michael Kropf dedicated himself as the managing director of the Sternwarte Uecht Foundation to the conception, realization, and opening of “SPACE EYE – Observatory for Space Research and Environment,” a flagship project with nationwide impact in Switzerland. The research and visitor center, opened in September 2023 in the Dark-Sky Zone near Bern in the Gantrisch Nature Park, features a large telescope, an 8K space simulator, a multimedia exhibition, an educational trail, and event spaces. After the first year of operation, Michael Kropf handed over the operational management and now focuses on further developing and marketing the successful project in a co-management role.

    Robert Meisner

    Robert Meisner studied geo-sciences at the University of Munich and holds a PhD from the mathematics faculty of the Free University of Berlin in geo-scientific data visualization. He worked at Stanford University in California, University College London and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) before joining the European Space Agency in Frascati, Italy.

    Meisner has over 30 years of experience in Earth observation from space and has contributed to several space missions. Currently, he is responsible for ESA Earth observation communication and for the exhibition center Φ-Experience at ESA’s establishment in Frascati, Italy.
