Machines Inside Me is a piece for three self-built electromechanical instruments and two performers. The instruments are equipped with automated mechanical components controlled by an Arduino processor, which has been programmed to allow the instruments to interact and assist the human performers during the performance of the piece. The electromechanical components follow their own ‘score’, synchronizing with the written parts of the human performers.

Meeting Point: POSTCITY, Ground Floor, Entrance Train Hall

During the performance, the audience will witness the real-time use of three partially automated electromechanical instruments. While the human performers activate the various sound-producing components that make up the different self-built instruments, the automated parts assist the human activity, extending their performance possibilities and the interaction solutions between the various components.

The starting point for the project’s development was the creation of instruments capable of producing and manipulating sound in functional and effective ways according to the aesthetic and sonic goals of the piece (and not vice versa). The automated components create a structure of fundamental sounds, which are orchestrated and manipulated in ever-changing ways by the human performers. These result in a shifting structure based on the arrangement and evolution of various orchestration solutions.

Fabio Machiavelli studied Percussion Instruments at the “Pietro Mascagni” Conservatory under Jonathan Faralli. He then studied composition with Claudio Vaira, Fabio De Sanctis De Benedictis, and Giovanni Verrando. In 2024, he became a student of Salvatore Sciarrino at the Accademia Chigiana. His work focuses on designing and building electromechanical instruments that he uses in his compositions. His works have been performed at major festivals like La Biennale di Venezia and Warsaw Autumn.
