Psychoanalysis was conceived by Sigmund Freud to study a factor of human life he encountered in his clinical experience. He named this factor the unconscious: something that is known without the subject knowing that it knows about it. The contradiction inherent in the definition of the unconscious has led psychoanalysis to be called an impossible profession. How can we know anything about it? See DH5 homepage for details.
