remote/displaced

Äänen Lumo (FI), Aalto University (FI), quietSpeaker (FI)

remote/displaced allows for an immersive exploration of a virtualized physical space: Öljysäiliö 468,  a vast, decommissioned and repurposed oil tank in East Helsinki.
Due to its shape and materials, its acoustics are extremely peculiar, with long reverberation times, shimmering echoes and immersive radiating patterns. In addition, it is an almost magical site for a modern sonic ritual due to its status as a relic of fossil-fuel culture, its position by the shore, and its nature, in-between a closed industrial space not meant for humans and a shell open to the surrounding land- and soundscapes, that constantly filter and reverberate in its open cavity.
The project takes the shape of a small collection of brief immersive audio-visual visits to this special remote place, exploring ways to listen to the encounter between sound, technology, space and landscape, as it emerges like a precarious ecosystem, where the boundaries between natural and artificial are constantly renegotiated and deformed by technology.
In between physical and virtual space, the brass instruments, an array of recycled sonic devices, the light, the wind and the sea waves, filtering through the holes on the metallic reverberant surfaces, transform one another.
The audience can access the various short experiences using a wide array of technologies, from VR goggles, to mobile phones or personal computers, both remotely and in situ during the festival.

Biographies

Andrea Mancianti (M.Mus. Composition and Music Technology, 2012, Conservatory of Florence, Cursus IRCAM, Paris, 2013-2014) is a composer, performer and instrument builder, devoted to experimental sonic arts. His artistic work includes music compositions, installations and mixed media performances. Currently he is a PhD candidate in the department of Media, of Aalto University, Helsinki, researching sonicbased immersive experiences. www.andreamancianti.com

Roberto Fusco (M.Phil. Music and Media Technology, D. Sc. (Technology), ITA/FI, b. 1980, is an Italian media artist based in Helsinki. He works with time-based digital and physical media, resulting in multichannel audiovisual installations and interactive multimedia works with kinetic sculptural elements. www.robertofusco.net

Sebastian J. Schlecht is Professor of Practice for Sound in Virtual Reality at the Aalto University, Finland – position shared between the Aalto Media Lab and the Aalto Acoustics Lab. His research interests include spatial audio processing with an emphasis on artificial reverberation, localization, panning, and 6-degrees-of-freedom virtual and mixed reality applications. In particular, his research efforts have been directed towards the intersection of mathematical filter design, efficient algorithms, perceptual aspects, and sound design. https://www.sebastianjiroschlecht.com/

Äänen Lumo (Charm of Sound) is an artist-run association from Helsinki, formed in 1995 to promote the Sonic Arts in Finland. In his 20 years od activity, Äänen Lumo has organised more than 300 events, including concerts, workshops and internet-, film- and gallery-based projects. Its focus is strongly directed towards establishing inclusive, pluralistic and experimental practices within the field. www.aanenlumo.com

quietSpeaker (Andrea Mancianti and Roberto Fusco) is a Helsinki based duo producing audio visual concerts and synaesthetic experiences. Together they explore the relationship between sound and images, their perceptual integration in time and space and intertwined choreography as one medium. Starting from concrete sounds and images, quietSpeaker constructs audiovisual narratives and reshape spaces using multi projections and custom objects. www.quietspeaker.net
