(Linz, April 11, 2022) Saturated, bold colors and impressive depictions of saints with a fascinating spatial effect. Albrecht Altdorfer’s Altar of St. Sebastian from St. Florian Abbey is one of the most precious art treasures of the late Middle Ages. Using a gigapixel photo by Linz photographer Florian Voggeneder, which reveals every last brushstroke, theologian Dr. Michael Zugmann and art historian Dr. Lothar Schultes will provide insights into the special features of this important altar on Maundy Thursday, April 14. Start is at 17:00. The entrance fee is 4 €, with a valid museum ticket the visit is free. This Deep Space Lecture is supported by LINZ AG.
Albrecht Altdorfer’s Sebastian’s Altar
Completed in 1518, the St. Florian Abbey’s Wandelaltar is one of the most precious art treasures of the late Middle Ages and is dedicated to St. Sebastian, who was venerated by many believers in the 16th century as the patron saint against the plague and other diseases. The panel paintings of the altar show in intense colors and moving drama the suffering of Jesus and the martyrdom of St. Sebastian. The pictures were painted by the then still young Albrecht Altdorfer, who would later become one of the most important artists of the German Renaissance. The shrine and the carved sculptures have been lost in the course of time; today twelve panels and two predella wings are in the monastery of St. Florian.
Lothar Schultes
Lothar Schultes was born in 1955 in Mistelbach, Lower Austria. After graduating from high school, he studied sculpture in the master class of Wander Bertoni at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, as well as art history and archaeology at the University of Vienna, where he was also a student assistant from 1979 -81 – 1981. From 1985 to 2020 Schultes worked at the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum in Linz, where he headed the collection of decorative arts and art until 1918. He also designed many exhibitions and is the author of numerous publications on art from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.
About the person: Michael Zugmann
Michael Zugmann was born in Linz in 1972. After graduating from high school, he studied theology in Salzburg and Linz, followed by a doctorate in 2009. From 2003 to 2019 Zugmann was an assistant, and from 2016 an assistant professor at the Institute for Biblical Studies of the Old and New Testaments at the Catholic Private University Linz. Since October 2019, he has headed the Liturgy and Church Music Department in the Pastoral Office of the Diocese of Linz and is also active in adult education.
