(Linz, 25.4.2022) He is one of the most important artists of the Art Nouveau period, his opulent paintings are known all over the world and his portraits of women are traded at top prices on the international art market. We are talking about Gustav Klimt, whose paintings of women will be the focus of a Deep Space Lecture Thursday evening, April 28, 2022. Franz Smola, art historian and Klimt expert at the Vienna Belvedere, will examine Klimt’s portraits of women with regard to the role models prevalent at the time and also take a closer look at the social position of the ladies depicted, using outstanding images from Google Arts & Culture. At the same time, Klimt’s works will be juxtaposed with the works of award-winning artist Rebecca Merlic, who will provide insights into the techniques and conception of her works and thus provide an important impetus for examining the image of women in contemporary art today. This Deep Space Lecture, which can also be followed via live stream, is supported by LINZ AG and HYPO Oberösterreich. Admission is free with a valid museum ticket.
About Franz Smola (AT)
Franz Smola has been curator of late 19th and early 20th century art at the Belvedere in Vienna since 2017. From 2009 to 2017, he served as curator of collections at the Leopold Museum, Vienna. From 2013 to 2015, he also held the position of interim Museum Director there. Smola regularly curates and co-curates exhibitions focusing on international classical modernism and Vienna around 1900. Most recently, Smola developed the show Klimt. La Secessione e l’Italia for the Museo di Roma.
About Rebecca Merlic (HR/AT)
Rebecca Merlic is a digital artist and architect, experimental filmmaker and university assistant in the core team of Experimental Game Cultures at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Her work is strongly influenced by alternative forms of society and the transgression of socio-economic conventions, as well as new forms of artistic and architectural production using new technologies. She is the recipient of the Marianne von Willemer Prize 2020 for digital media. She is currently a transdisciplinary participant in the “European Alliance of Academies: Ignorance is Strength AIR” program and is working on “DigitalHumanism x FutureLiving” in collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum in Tokyo.
