Science Days: Machines with Sense and Sensors

(Linz, September 13, 2012) Robots have long been an integral part of lifestyle products—they react to people and to their environment, and people react to them. At Science Days in the Ars Electronica Center, visitors learn to program and design small LEGO robots, tune in to the sounds of all sorts of machines, get acquainted with the Telenoid as the communications device of the future, and experience how findings in the field of robotics can make a positive contribution to human health.

Equipped with a special detector, visitors on a reconnaissance tour of the Ars Electronica Center can tune in to the “voices” of the facility’s mechanical infrastructure and objects on exhibit there.
Let’s do WEDO (age 7+)

Do-it-yourself robots? Out of Lego building blocks? WEDO is a Lego kit that lets kids age 7-12 create robotic objects on their own. All it takes are simple programming techniques, a diverse array of components, and tiny sensors.
ROBOplastic (age 6+)

Magnetism and materials that react to changes in their immediate surroundings are the featured attractions in ROBOplastic. Various examples illustrate how quickly people impute life in things in which no life is actually present. Workshop participants will use laundry detergent, wood glue and magnetite to produce a magnetic mass and bring it to life using supermagnets.
