Science Days: Machines with Sense and Sensors
Saturday & Sunday, September 15-16, 2012 / 10 AM-6 PM / Ars Electronica Center
(Linz, September 13, 2012) Robots have long been an integral part of lifestyle products—they react to people and to their environment, and people react to them. At Science Days in the Ars Electronica Center, visitors learn to program and design small LEGO robots, tune in to the sounds of all sorts of machines, get acquainted with the Telenoid as the communications device of the future, and experience how findings in the field of robotics can make a positive contribution to human health.
An overview of the Science Days program:
The Parlance of Machinery
Saturday, September 15, 2012 / 11:30 AM, 1:30 & 3:30 PM
Equipped with a special detector, visitors on a reconnaissance tour of the Ars Electronica Center can tune in to the “voices” of the facility’s mechanical infrastructure and objects on exhibit there.
Let’s do WEDO (age 7+)
Sunday, September 16, 2012 / 2-4:30 PM
Do-it-yourself robots? Out of Lego building blocks? WEDO is a Lego kit that lets kids age 7-12 create robotic objects on their own. All it takes are simple programming techniques, a diverse array of components, and tiny sensors.
ROBOplastic (age 6+)
Sunday, September 16, 2012 / 3-5:30 PM
Magnetism and materials that react to changes in their immediate surroundings are the featured attractions in ROBOplastic. Various examples illustrate how quickly people impute life in things in which no life is actually present. Workshop participants will use laundry detergent, wood glue and magnetite to produce a magnetic mass and bring it to life using supermagnets.
I switch 2 Bot
Saturday & Sunday, September 15-16, 2012 / 10 AM-6 PM
“I switch 2 Bot” is all about the entertaining design of robots and detecting them in objects in which no one would suspect their presence.
Saturday, September 15, 2012 / 10 AM-5 PM / Sunday, September 16, 2012 / 10 AM-2 PM
In vibROBOTs, a tiny vibration motor and a bit of imagination are all it takes to turn toothbrush heads and screw-on caps into little robotic creatures.
Face to Face
Saturday & Sunday, September 15-16, 2012 / 11 AM and 1, 3 & 5 PM
Discover how fascinating robotics can be and see how focusing on the remote control of a telecommunications robot also changes its perception.
Cyborgs & Medicine – The Machine in Me
