(Linz, April 20, 2016) Under the aegis of the European Digital Art and Science Network, Ars Electronica cordially invites artists to take part in a competition for a residency at the European Space Agency (ESA) and at the Ars Electronica Futurelab. This residency offers artists an extraordinary opportunity to experience the landing of the Rosetta space probe and the ExoMars Mission live on site at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. This visit to the ESA facility will be followed by a one-month stay at the Ars Electronica Futurelab, where the artist-in-residence can bring his/her project to fruition. The deadline of this open call for applications is June 6, 2016 at midnight. Entries may be submitted online at ars.electronica.art/artandscience. The recipient of the residency will be selected by a jury made up of representatives of the ESA, Ars Electronica Linz and the European Digital Art and Science Network’s member institutions.
Residency at the ESA and at the Ars Electronica Futurelab
The initial phase of the residency, a 2-6-week stay at the ESA, is meant to serve at a source of inspiration. Phase 2, an approximately 4-week stay at the Ars Electronica Futurelab, is dedicated to completing an artistic project. The ESA’s efforts are now focused on exploration of the Sun and the magnetic fields of the Earth, Mars, Saturn and the 67P/C-G comet. Current missions include producing a three-dimensional survey of the Milky Way and exploring Mars. In September 2016, the ESA’s Rosetta space probe will actually land on the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet and collect data there, and shortly thereafter, ExoMars 2016 will arrive at the destination of its mission and thereby open up a new chapter in the history of European space travel. In conjunction with their residency, artists will enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience these extraordinary events live in the company of staff experts on site at the ESA research center.
Online Submissions
Artists’ applications for this residency will be accepted at https://ars.electronica.art/artandscience from April 20 through and including June 9, 2016. Every submission must include a video that provides specifics about the concrete ideas and projects for which the recipient hopes to derive inspiration. Other essential elements of every application are a sketch of the proposed art project, a cost estimate, and an overview of the artist’s previous work.
Presentation at the Ars Electronica Festival and in Traveling Exhibitions
The works created by the artists-in-residence will be showcased at the Ars Electronica Festival 2016/2017, on the premises of selected ESA facilities, and in modular traveling exhibitions running at the European Digital Art and Science Network’s seven partner institutions: Center for the Promotion of Science / Serbia, DIG Gallery / Slovakia, Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation / Spain, Kapelica Gallery – Kernikova / Slovenia, GV Art / United Kingdom, Laboral / Spain, Science Gallery / Ireland.
