The Long Night of the Stages at the Ars Electronica Center
Saturday, November 11, 2017 / 7-11:30 PM

(Linz, November 8, 2017) The 7th Long Night of the Stages is set for Saturday, November 11, 2017, and one of this year’s venues is the Ars Electronica Center, where a very special program is lined up for visitors. Deep Space 8K will be the setting for a display of interactive worlds of imagery conjured up with laser tracking, 3D animated time travel back to the dawn of humankind, an impressive demonstration via Cinematic Rendering of the anatomy of articles of clothing, and a performance that enables spectators to behold trailblazing ways new technologies are currently being used in the theater. Plus, there’s musical cabaret for the whole family, an ensemble performing polyphonic Jazz & Pop songs, and an excursion into the world of Hip-Hop and urban dance styles.

Overview of the program at the Ars Electronica Center:

The Memories of Borderline / CyberRäuber (DE), Schauspiel Dortmund (DE)
7-7:20 & 9:30-9:50 PM / Deep Space 8K

“The Memories of Borderline” explores new possibilities of using technology in conjunction with staged-based plays and lets audience members assume the role of narrator. The work’s theme is personal memory and transience, dealing with them amidst three-dimensional spaces in which the walls progressively deteriorate as the play unfolds. Audible in the background are music and texts, and there appear videos of scenes that might have taken place in these spaces—scenes from a mise-en-scène that showcases life in all its facets in contrast to the evanescence of the virtual world.

All Wagner / David Wagner (AT)
7:15-7:45 PM / Sky Loft

Having spent many years as a member of various ensembles, versatile musician David Wagner now presents a solo program. And “All Wagner” truly does live up to expectations—whether its vocals, piano, keyboard, violin, glockenspiel, kazoo or even the compositions themselves—this time, David does everything! Wagner’s range is impressive indeed: melancholy hymns, updated Austropop classics, and a musicological disquisition on the clumsy interplay of word and sound in various national anthems.

Cooperative Aesthetics – One Stage for All / Time-based and Interactive Media program, Linz Art University (AT) / 7:30-7:50 PM / Deep Space 8K

Students taking Linz Art University’s “AEC Deep Space” course worked with Ars Electronica Futurelab staff experts to program interactive works for Deep Space 8K. The physical movements of audience members outfitted with laser tracking technology produce changes in the projections and sounds.

Jazz and Popular Music / Vokal Oval vocal ensemble (AT)
8:15-8:45 PM / Sky Loft

Sky Loft will also be serving as the venue for a musical performance of polyphonic Jazz & Pop songs interpreted by a group from the Musikschule Neuhofen/Krems.

FAT #1 – Another Dimension of Fashion / Fashion and Technology, Linz Art University (AT) / 8:15-8:45 / Deep Space 8K

Fashion & Technology, Linz Art University’s newest program of study, invites you to take a virtual journey through the anatomy of various garments.

Pitoti Prometheus / Frederick Baker (AT/UK), Marcel Karnapke (DE)
9-9:20 PM / Deep Space 8K

Austrian-British scholar Frederick Baker and his German colleague Marcel Karnapke have produced an extraordinary VR animated film that takes viewers back to the time of our earliest ancestors. In it, humankind is liberated from imprisonment in rock by Prometheus, a figure from Greek mythology. The film was inspired by the Pitoti petroglyphs, images carved into rock at Valcamonica, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in Northern Italy.

Die Niederträchtigen – In the Best Years / Die Niederträchtigen (AT)
10-1030 PM / Ars Electronica Center / Sky Loft

The program celebrating the 20th anniversary of the music cabaret trio “Die Niederträchtigen” [The Vile Ones] blends the Sturm und Drang of their youthful years with the gradually emerging wisdom of later life, and thus rings in a new era: The Best Years. With lyrics written by themselves and others; music made by three throats and eight instruments.

Performance / Urban Dance Styles & Urban Artists
10-11 PM / Deep Space 8K

This is a trip into the world of HipHop and the diverse dance styles associated with it performed by students and instructors in Anton Bruckner University’s Urban Dance Styles program.
