(Linz, May 2, 2019) slow immediate is the winner of a residency in the European ARTificial Intelligence Lab competition initiated by Ars Electronica. The duo, Xin Liu (CN/US) and Gershon Dublon (US), was nominated for their project “The wandering mind,” now being realized through residencies at the Muntref Centro de Arte y Ciencia, the Laboratorio de Neurociencia de la Universidad Torquato Ditella in Buenos Aires, and the Ars Electronica Futurelab in Linz. The result will then be presented at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz in September 2020 and at the Muntref Centro de Arte y Ciencia in Buenos Aires. The European ARTificial Intelligence Lab is co-financed by the European Commission’s Creative Europe program.
The wandering mind
With its project “The wandering mind,” slow immediate intends to shift perception of self beyond the individual, to encompass our interconnected planetary system. The project draws on a wealth of open data collected as we observe our planet; such as real-time data and sounds from the Tidmarsh Living Observatory, global field recordings from Radio Aporee, seismic data from the IRIS network, and a number of other global sensor databases. Combined with AI-based systems for sensory processing, these sources form the basis for a multi-sensory collage, controlled using “attention-based wearables,” that makes the earth’s pulse perceptible. The result is an interactive sound installation, a meditative experience in which the senses and awareness of the audience wander around the world and become part of a greater whole.
Xin Liu is an artist and engineer whose practice includes performances, art objects, scientific experiments and academic works. She considers science as a language and technology a means to explore emotions, beliefs, and subjective experiences. Liu is arts curator of the Space Exploration Initiative at the MIT Media Lab. She has won numerous residencies and awards and has presented at the Sundance Film Festival, the Walker Art Center, the OCAT Shanghai, and the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz.
Gershon Dublon is a researcher, artist, and engineer creating environments, installations, systems, and studies for aesthetic and transformative sensory experience. His work has been exhibited at the Boston MFA and shown at Montreal’s RIDM and at Ars Electronica. His writing appears in journals such as Presence and Scientific American.
In 2018, Xin Liu and Gershon Dublon founded slow immediate, a creative practice and engineering studio, currently housed in the New Museum’s NEW INC program.
European ARTificial Intelligence Lab
Together with twelve renowned art and cultural institutions, Ars Electronica has launched the European ARTificial Intelligence Lab. The Europe-wide initiative, set to run for three years, is co-financed by the Creative Europe program of the European Union and offers artists the opportunity to complete a residency at the Muntref Centro de Arte y Ciencia (Museum of the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero, Art and Science Center) as well as at the Laboratorio de Neurociencia de la Universidad Torquato Ditella in Buenos Aires and the Ars Electronica Futurelab in Linz. The first residency call is aimed at artists who wish to develop new artistic approaches at the interface of neuroscience and artificial intelligence. The results of the residency will then be presented at the Ars Electronica Festival 2020 and at the Muntref Centro de Arte y Ciencia in Buenos Aires.
Next open call in August 2019
The European ARTificial Intelligence Lab’s next open call will begin in August 2019, offering artists an opportunity to spend several weeks performing research at the University of Edinburgh’s Edinburgh Futures Institute—one of Europe’s leading institutions in the fields of data science, AI education, research and innovation—and at the Ars Electronica Futurelab.
