(Linz, 21.9.2022) Exoskeletons that help people with heavy physical work, individual prostheses with that certain something and computer-assisted solutions for people with disabilities. Saturday 24.9. and Sunday 25.9.2022, visitors* to the Ars Eelctronica Center can expect a family weekend on the theme “How much technology am I?” Sunday 25.9. 2022, on “Monument Day” in Deep Space 8K, visitors will embark on a fascinating journey to four monumental buildings from different eras – from the Stone Age burial mound in Scotland to the pyramids of Giza and Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral to the Extremely Large Telescope in Chile.
Theme tour: How much technology am I?
SAT 24.9. and SUN 25.9.2022 / 15:00 / Duration: 45 minutes
During the theme tour, participants will learn how technology is already contributing to the expansion of human capabilities, in which areas a “fusion” with the body can be helpful and in which areas it can be harmful. The SecondBodyLab will also show the aesthetic possibilities offered by the design of a prosthesis.
Open Workshop: Body Design
SAT 24.9. and SUN 25.9.2022 / 14:00 – 17:00
What would it be like if we humans could equip ourselves with the body parts of other living beings? Would wings come in handy when riding a bike or tentacles be beneficial when playing ball? In this workshop, inventiveness and imagination are called for – “fabulous” body parts can be built with threads and set in motion by means of pulling mechanisms.
LIFEtool – Computer Aided Communication
SAT 24.9.2022 / 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The non-profit company LIFEtool from Linz helps people with disabilities to adapt communication aids and alternative controls for the computer, tablet or smartphone, thus not only enabling self-determined communication but also making it easier to play, learn or work. How this works in practice will be demonstrated by a young gentleman from Offenhausen near Wels, who uses his eye-controlled computer to communicate with his family and friends.
Monument Day: Deep Space – Total Monumental
SUN 25.9.2022 / 11:30 – 12:00 & 15:00 – 15:30
What inspires people to build structures that persist hundreds or even thousands of years after their demise? “Total Monumental” on Sunday features four monumental buildings from different eras that continue to amaze people today. The journey begins in Maeshowe, Scotland, where the clever arrangement of megaliths inside a colossal burial mound is reminiscent of a Stone Age cathedral. The tour continues to the Pyramid of Cheops, the only surviving wonder of the ancient world, and from there to St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. The last stop is a monumental building of the future: the Extremely Large Telescope currently under construction at Cerro Armazones in Chile.
