(Linz, 18.10.2022) 27 asteroids discovered by amateur astronomers from Linz and software developed in Linz for use in NASA missions: the Kepler Observatory in Linz can not only look back on an eventful history, but can also be quite proud of the achievements and discoveries of its members. To mark its 75th anniversary, the Ars Electronica Center is dedicating a small exhibition of its own to the Linz observatory. In addition, visitors this coming weekend can learn interesting facts about the most violent meteorite impacts on Earth and their consequences, take part in telescope courses or virtually experience outer space in all its glory via 16×9-meter wall and floor projections. Weather permitting, a partial solar eclipse will be observed with special telescopes on Tuesday, 25.10.2022.
Exhibition opening: Kepler Observatory Linz

To mark the 75th anniversary of the Kepler Observatory, an exhibition about the Linz observatory will open at the Ars Electronica Center on October 20. Visitors will learn all kinds of interesting facts about the observatory’s history and astronomical discoveries, including 27 asteroids that were recorded for the first time by members of the Kepler Observatory. In addition, the very first telescope of the Linz observatory can be inspected.
Deep Space Lecture: Cradle of Life and Danger from Space

More than a week ago, NASA’s “Dart” spacecraft intentionally collided with the asteroid Dimorphos. The collision at a distance of about eleven million kilometers was not an accident, however, but rather the preliminary conclusion of a historic experiment in which an attempt was made to determine whether an approaching asteroid on an Earth course could be deflected away from our home planet with the help of an artificial spacecraft. Geochemist Christian Köberl, university professor for impact research planetary geology at the University of Vienna will talk about the largest and most important meteorite impacts on Earth and their consequences.

A wide variety of children’s interests are covered in the Children’s Research Lab. Various garbage cans filled to the brim with exciting materials and games are waiting to be discovered and explored. From outer space to bionics, from the human body to 3D printing.
Telescope Course of the Linz Astronomical Society

Members of the Linz Astronomical Society explain practical astronomy with a telescope to visitors. At the end of this course, participants* will be able to orient themselves in the night sky and know how to use various telescopes. The price per person is 70 euros, please register at kurs@sternwarte.at.
Deep Space Family Astronomy

Thousands of twinkling points of light, some darker, some brighter, in shades of blue or yellow or soft pink: viewing the night sky has always held a great fascination for people. In the Ars Electronica Center’s Deep Space 8K, 16-by-9-meter wall and floor projections take us on breathtaking journeys through space, including side trips to the ISS, a black hole and a neutron star.

Open Workshop: Space Craft Material Kit

What are spaceships, rockets and satellites actually made of and what requirements must the materials used for them meet? In this workshop, children become materials researchers and conduct experiments in which they learn about the building materials used in space travel.
Observation of the partial solar eclipse

A partial solar eclipse is coming up on Tuesday, 25.10.2022. Members of the Kepler Observatory Linz will set up special telescopes in front of the Ars Electronica Center, weather permitting, to observe this celestial phenomenon together with visitors.
