ESERO Program on Space and the Long Night of Museums

(Linz, September 30, 2024) The annual World Space Week of the United Nations will be celebrated in 2024 at the Ars Electronica Center with a special program of workshops, presentations, lectures and tours. From Friday, October 4 to Sunday, October 6, ESERO Austria will be taking participants on a journey into the depths of space, using practical experiments to make space travel a tangible adventure for space fans of all ages.

Artistic positions on the growing importance of outer space for life on Earth, technology and the economy can be found in the newly established exhibition area “I Need More Space”, which is now open. Night owls can use Saturday 5 October to explore: the Long Night of Museums is set to take place throughout Austria after the regular opening hours. Those interested in culture will then have the chance to visit all Ars Electronica Center’s exhibitions and take part in selected hands-on activities until midnight.

The Space Week Tour at the Ars Electronica Center allows visitors to rediscover exhibitions through the lens of astronomy and space travel. In the process, the view is directed not only towards the vastness of the universe, but also down onto our planet from above.

Deep Space Lecture: Deep Space Lecture: A Journey through Time – from the Beginning and End(?) of the Universe

In Deep Space 8K, astrophysicist Julia Weratschnig from the Haus der Natur in Salzburg, Austria, invites visitors on an exciting journey through our solar system. Together with the audience, she takes a look at the beginnings of the universe, using detailed astronomical images to show how galaxies and stars are formed and constantly change.

Astronomy Telescope Course: Practical Astronomy

A telescope allows you to see the sky with new eyes – but you need to learn how to use it. In the two-part astronomy telescope course on 5 and 6 October, participants will observe fascinating celestial phenomena, learn how to orient themselves in the starry sky and try out different types of telescopes from the Kepler Observatory Linz.

The Universe in 3D: Uniview, a true-to-scale real-time 3D simulation, puts visitors in the role of astronauts. On a virtual flight through the galaxy, the dimensions of the universe open up and the latest achievements in space exploration become tangible.

Deep Space Special: By Tardigrade through the Galaxy

To survive in space, a tardigrade doesn’t even need a spacesuit. Visitors of Deep Space 8K can imitate them and travel through virtual galaxies at lightning speed. Key stops on the exploration tour: a Mars Rover on our neighbouring planet and the International Space Station ISS.

Open Workshop: Space Debris Tentacles | for ages 8 and up
Sat 5. Oct 2024 10:30 – 12:30, Sun 6. Oct 10:30-12:30

In the Space Debris Tentacles creative workshop, children aged eight and over will explore how space can be kept clean and how the Earth’s orbit can be protected from space debris. After conducting experiments together, the children will develop ideas on how to effectively remove space debris, taking inspiration from nature.
