School Holiday Program at the Ars Electronica Center: Into the Universe and the Microcosm

(Linz, October 16, 2024) The Ars Electronica Center is turning the autumn holidays into a journey of discovery: from October 29 to 31, three workshops for children between the ages of six and 14 are on the agenda. The colorful program encourages observation, research and experimentation.

The young participants will take their first steps in programming, learn about space technology and experience the microcosm as an exciting habitat. Creative ideas and curiosity are needed to build a personal “Wish Machine”.

The autumn holiday program is funded by AK Upper Austria. Each workshop lasts 3.5 hours and costs €7 per participant. The workshops are free for children of AK members.

Program Overview

Holiday Program: Im Moos viel los (Lots going on in the moss) | 6 to 10 years
Tue 29. Oct 2024 9:00 – 12:30

A glance through the magnifying glass reveals that a lot is happening in the microcosm. Buzzy paramecia, ciliates, bristle worms and waterbears make their way through their very own world. It is particularly exciting in the green moss, where, with a trained eye, threadworms, larvae and bacteria can be discovered. Workshop participants aged six and up take a look at the fascinating microcosm and its secrets.

Holiday Program: Wish Machine Workshop| 12 to 14 years
Wed 30. Oct 2024, 9:00 – 12:30

Creativity and dexterity are essential in the Wish Machine workshop, where bold inventions become tangible prototypes. The BBC micro:bit, a single-board computer that packs a powerful punch, is used here. And with the right tools, which can be found in the Ars Electronica Labs, participants can soon send their own wish machine into a test run.

Holiday Program: A micro:bit of Space | 12 to 14 years
Thu 31. Oct 2024, 9:00 – 12:30

In the A micro:bit of Space workshop, children aged 12-14 will take their first steps in programming and discover how their new skills could be used in a real space mission. Together they will test the BBC micro:bit, a playful introduction to the world of space technology. The workshop is run by ESERO Austria.
