Coexist

Emergence Delft (NL)

Quantum technologies are developing fast, promising new ways of computing, sensing, and securing information. But as they grow more powerful, they also raise difficult questions. How will these systems shape our society, and who will they benefit? Coexist responds to the lack of public understanding around quantum science by turning abstract principles into something people can see, feel, and reflect on.

The installation is based on artistic research by Emergence Delft, a student-led, interdisciplinary team. Visitors pass through a large-scale structure that uses light and polarizing filters to show how quantum concepts like superposition and measurement work. Just as particles exist in many states until observed, the installation reveals how different perspectives affect what we see and know. By linking quantum theory with social experience, Coexist opens a space for dialogue about complexity, uncertainty, and the future we are building with technology.

  • Emergence Delft

Emergence Delft is a student-led collective founded in 2023 that brings together art and technology students from TU Delft and art schools. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, they create artworks that explore and reflect on the societal impact of emerging technologies. By combining artistic intuition with technical insight, Emergence Delft invites public dialog and critical thinking about the role of technology in our lives.

Emergence Delft’s project was made possible through the support and collaboration of Quantum Delta NL, QuTech, TNO, Delft University of Technology. Quantum Delta NL has played an important role in the realization of this work. As a national initiative committed to advancing the Dutch quantum ecosystem, they recognize the importance of bridging quantum innovation with society. Their support has empowered Emergence Delft to create the artwork and make it accessible to a broad public. QuTech, a quantum research institute at TU Delft campus, contributed through PhD students whose expertise ensured scientific accuracy. TNO, like Emergence Delft, is actively engaged in raising awareness about quantum technology. They supported the team in reaching a wider audience and promoting public understanding of quantum technologies. TU Delft provided the facilities and workspace to develop and produce the installation.
