Are We Ready for Interspecies Dinner Dates?

Peter Holzkorn (AT), Nicolas Naveau (FR/AT), Anna Weiss (DE/AT)

Corpus Corax is a speculative, interactive interspecies experience that immerses the visitors in communication with ravens in an age of Artificial Intelligence, animal intelligence, and human confusion. The project features an experiential exhibit, based on typically human, formalized interaction scenarios, resembling a conversation over dinner.

From similar vocal range to tool use, there are many aspects that connect us with this species in uncanny ways. We build on this connection to challenge and stimulate the visitor to engage. Our HuRT (Human-Raven Translator) is a speculative infrastructure technology designed for real-time “Raven” translation. It is an experiment in natural language processing and generative sound synthesis, drawing on recent generative AI innovations and extensive bird behavior studies. We are exploring behavioral research insights with data from our partner, the Konrad Lorenz Research Center of the University of Vienna.

  • Ars Electronica Futurelab

The Futurelab is the Ars Electronica’s artistic R&D laboratory and atelier. Together with worldwide partners, the Futurelab strives to create works that reveal the transformative force that emerges when art, technology, and society converge. The goal is to use these works as a catalyst for future innovation and societal change. The outcomes build on the Futurelab’s Art Thinking method, Art Science Research, and Future Impact Creation for experimental, exploratory future prototyping.

  • Peter Holzkorn

Peter Holzkorn is Key Researcher & Artist for Data Sentience at the Ars Electronica Futurelab. His research investigates the relationship between society and data through explorations between data science, art, and AI. He joined Futurelab in 2011 and has worked on a multitude of projects, including several large-scale data art installations, the lab's swarm robotics projects, and the Futurelab Academy.

  • Nicolas Naveau

Nicolas Naveau studied art at the Fine Art School in Angers, France. From 1997 to 2002 he worked as a course instructor for French culture (art history, comics, cinema) at the Centre for Adult Education in Vienna. Due to his interests and skills in the fields of art, graphic, and information design, he became a freelancer for Ars Electronica in 2002. Since 2006 Nicolas Naveau has been working as an artist and senior researcher in the field of information design at the Ars Electronica Futurelab.

  • Anna Weiss

Working at the intersection of science and art has always fascinated Anna Weiss. After studying Technical Physics at Johannes Kepler University Linz, she is now pursuing a teacher training program in Visual Arts and Physics at the University of Arts Linz. At the Ars Electronica Futurelab, she applies her diverse skill set to creative prototyping, art-thinking research, mentoring artists-in-residence, creative project management and more besides.
