They have a common motif, but have never stood opposite each other. A century lies between the two artists Gustav Klimt and Rebecca Merlic. A century that was marked by enormous change in all areas of life and an incredible number of events. But it is not only the media of their paintings and the associated tools that have expanded – from analogue brushstrokes to digital laser scans – but also the role of women and the resulting role images. Curator and Klimt expert Franz Smola and media artist Rebecca Merlic met at the Ars Electronica Center to juxtapose portraits of women from different periods in cooperation with the Belvedere Vienna and Google Arts & Culture. Who are these depicted women actually? And how did it come about that artists put them in the picture? (The Deep Space Lecture was held in German language)

How does the image of women today differ from the image of women then? What do the two artists have in common? Read an interview with Franz Smola and Rebecca Merlic on the Ars Electronica Blog!
