DOORS – Digital Incubator for Museums

DOORS – Digital Incubator for Museums was a project dedicated to fostering digitalisation in small and medium-sized museums as a way of helping them stay relevant in uncertain times. The project created a space for small museums to access knowledge, resources, and expertise, and gain hands-on experience in a two-stage incubation programme that encouraged them to explore reconfigurations of their spaces and offers, new ways of content distribution, and new revenue and organisational models that harmoniously integrate technology in their ecosystems.

The work done in DOORS gave Ars Electronica Platform Europe an opportunity to understand the specific needs of small and medium-sized museums in the process of digitalisation. This fed into our ongoing investigation into the cultural and creative sectors’ digital transformation and allowed us to test new practices focused on incubation and experimentation.

Ars Electronica led the project and was involved in developing an incubation programme that supported the design of future-proof digital projects and strategies by 20 small and medium-sized museums in Europe. Ars Electronica was also in charge of the dissemination of the project’s research results and publications.
