From Corona via Auschwitz to Mauthausen and back
A scene from the protest movement against the Corona measures: In November 2020, an eleven-year-old girl in Karlsruhe recounts that she had to be very quiet during a secret birthday party with friends and that she felt like Anne Frank in her hiding place. A comparison that sparked indignation. But let’s assume that she really did identify with Anne Frank in this context: What could we say to her, and what could we explain? Gudrun Blohberger, head of education at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial, and Christian Angerer, staff member in education, argue for telling complete stories in order to make evident what is comparable and what is not. In the lecture, they tell the stories of Anne Frank, her diary and the Frank and van Pels families in the Holocaust. These stories lead via Auschwitz also to the concentration camp Mauthausen.
