7680 × 4320 pixels, ultra-high definition and hyper-realistic moments. What unprecedented possibilities can 8K technology integrate into everyday media use?

Technology helps inform society and at the same time raises our awareness towards important issues and future questions. 8K is used by scientists and artists to not just visualize data but to express their projects in ways that resonate with our environment. It’s high and realistic resolution can express new details, provide better knowledge and awareness. It brings out emotions and empathy in a very powerful way. When we experience environments, memories, and stories of others in this hyper-realistic world of 8K, it makes us feel at the spot of the moment. We cannot help but feel and connect in a powerful way.

A collaboration between the Ars Electronica Futurelab and Japan’s largest public broadcaster NHK, focuses on several key scenarios that explore the future of the next generation of the technology, framing and applications of 8K UHDTV content, based on questions of image composition and new forms of staging. Several approaches were developed and tested as Beyond the Frame – Future Projects and Cascade in selected scenarios.
