Claudia Nicholson’s paintings reconfigure colonial depictions of first contact in the Americas, embedding the work with folklore and personal histories in a bid to disrupt colonial narratives. Landscapes are rearranged to leak into each other, to conflate time, myth and ecologies.
For Nicholson, this collaboration offered the opportunity to extend and connect these worlds and the characters that inhabit it. Experimenting with digital workflows in collaboration with Tactical Space Lab, the project considers the virtual space as a site for recomposing narratives of memory and futurity. Outcomes of the studio are a series of ‘character studies’ that illustrate the creative processes developed through the studio, from design, skinning, rigging, animation, and cloth simulation, to final render.

Biography
Claudia Nicholson (AU) is an interdisciplinary artist based on Gadigal land (Sydney, Australia). Her practice examines psychic and physical connections to place through multidisciplinary forms of art making including painting, installation, performance and video. She is interested in creating acts of collective remembrance, exploring the ways in which we navigate the complexities of identity in a post-colonial context.
