Ars Electronica Home Delivery
(Linz, Jan. 18, 2022) 15 times sharper images than the Hubble telescope, 15 times the light-gathering power of the largest optical telescopes currently in operation and a mirror diameter of 39 meters: The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is a project of superlatives. On Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022, Dr. Peter Habison of the ESO will provide insights into the progress of construction of the ELT at Ars Electronica Home Delivery and tell what astronomers actually expect from it. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. Today, at 6:00 p.m., young researchers will join Ars Electronica Futurelab staffers in speculating about the future of …
Experts of the Future
TUE 18.1.2022 / 6:00 P.M.
On the occasion of the Ars Electronica Futurelab’s 25th anniversary, its members have solicited opinions from futurologists in order to speculate a bit together about what might still lie ahead of us. What’s special about these experts? They are on average seven years old and know a lot about undiscovered planets, diversity, mobility and nature. A prototype workshop by the Ars Electronica Futurelab.
Deep Space LIVE: The World’s Largest Eye – ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope
THU 20.1.2022 / 7:00 P.M.
Since May 2017, the Extremely Large Telescope, or ELT for short, has been under construction at the 3046-meter Cerro Armazones in Chile’s Atacama Desert. When completed, the superlative telescope will be the largest telescope ever, with its primary mirror alone measuring 39 meters in diameter. The ELT’s optics follow a new design in which light passes through a total of five mirrors and will provide images about 15 times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope. Starting at 19:00, Dr. Peter Habison, astronomer, physicist and head of ESO’s science communication for Austria, will report on the current construction progress and tell what exactly will be explored with the telescope. The spectrum of topics ranges from exoplanets and black holes to fundamental questions of physics.
Ars Electronica Home Delivery
“Ars Electronica Home Delivery” is a weekly program that includes guided tours of Ars Electronica exhibitions, excursions to Ars Electronica Labs, visits to the Machine Learning Studio, concerts with real-time visualizations, Deep Space LIVE sessions, workshops with engineers and talks with artists and scientists from around the world, as well as offerings for schools, universities and companies. “Ars Electronica Home Delivery” aims to make the artistic-scientific examination of the future accessible to as broad an audience as possible.
