Ars Electronica Home Delivery
(Linz, 8.12.2021) Using thousands of photos and special software, the Ars Electronica Futurelab has digitized not only all the figures but also the architecture and landscape of the famous Osterrieder Nativity scene at Linz’s St. Mary’s Cathedral and made it possible to experience it virtually down to the smallest detail. Between Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021 and Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, the Virtual Nativity will be presented at Ars Electronica Home Delivery in its Advent, Christmas and Epiphany settings, revealing exciting stories along the way.
As early as Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, Hideaki Ogawa, Director Ars Electronica Futurelab will devote the last issue of Artistic Journalism to the exhibition “There Is No Planet B” and the subject of climate change. Start time is 08:30. a.m.
Inside Futurelab: Advent in the Virtual Crib
SUN 12.12.2021 / 4 p.m.
In the Advent version of Sebastian Osterrieder’s Nativity scene, shepherds and sheep dominate the scenery. For the time being, the grotto of the Nativity is populated only by ox and donkey in front of a feeding trough. Above the cave, however, a halo of angels making music can already be seen, foreshadowing the future significance of the place.
Inside Futurelab: Christmas in the Virtual Crib

The design of the Nativity scene at Christmas is influenced by the tradition handed down from the Gospel of Luke. Therefore, from Christmas to January 5, the Holy Family with the newborn child and the shepherds kneeling in front of the grotto with their sheep can be seen.
Inside Futurelab: Epiphany in the Virtual Crib

The design of the nativity scene on Epiphany is influenced by the accounts of the evangelist Matthew. Instead of the shepherds, there are now the astrologers and magi, together with their retinue. Servants carry the royal insignia and a royal mantle, servants lead horses, elephants and camels. The child is no longer lying in the manger but is already sitting on Mary’s lap.

In the final lecture in the Artistic Journalism series, Hideaki Ogawa, Director of the Ars Electronica Futurelab, Nicolas Naveau, Senior Researcher & Artist Ars Electronica Futurelab, and Christoph Kremer, Managing Director of the Ars Electronica Center, will present the exhibition “There Is No Planet B”. Together, they’ll address the issue of climate change and discuss how such problems might be solved.

“Ars Electronica Home Delivery” is a weekly program that includes Guided Tours of Ars Electronica exhibitions, excursions to Ars Electronica Labs, visits to the Machine Learning Studio, concerts with real-time visualizations, Deep Space LIVE sessions, workshops with engineers and talks with artists and scientists from around the world, as well as programs for schools, universities and companies. “Ars Electronica Home Delivery” aims to make the artistic-scientific examination of the future accessible to the widest possible audience.
